Norman Solomon will speak to Council of Mayors and Councilmembers
Marin Independent Journal
From an article by political columnist Dick Spotswood
Marin's Council of Mayors and Councilmembers generally stays out of politics, but that may temporarily change. San Anselmo Mayor Ford Greene has invited Norman Solomon to be the speaker at the group's April 27 public dinner meeting. The monthly sessions are hosted in rotation by Marin's eleven municipalities. In April, it's the Hub City's turn.
The issue is that Solomon has begun his campaign to succeed North Bay Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. The Petaluma Democrat is expected to announce her retirement by midsummer.
A West Marin resident, Solomon is an often-published foreign policy writer. Woolsey along with Sean Penn and Daniel Ellsberg have praised his books. Solomon's positions are virtually identical with that of Woolsey, putting him on the left or "progressive" wing of the Democrats.
A majority of San Anselmo councilmembers believe Greene is injecting his politics into what is essentially a government meeting. It's not their decision. Unlike the practice in most towns, in San Anselmo the mayor selects MCMC's speaker. Of course, a majority vote can always change council practices.
